Improving your Craft
This meeting is free and open to the public
Join us for
a workshop session for writers of all genres. Joyce Walters will discuss Stephen
King’s book On Writing. Ray Zimmerman will lead two activities for writers
wanting to structure their journaling experience and develop a journal as a
source of raw material useful for refinement into nonfiction, fiction, and poetic
works.
Emily
Thomsen began writing in 2003 when she journaled faithfully her
attempted thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (read about her experiences
here -- and
sign the guestbook!). Addicted followers of her journal complimented
her writing style and asked for more. Since then she has had two
magazine articles published, one in the ASI Update and one in
the Amazing Facts Inside Report.
Emily is still finding her voice, deciding in just what direction
she will take her writing career. She has an idea for a novel
based on her 2003 hike, but for now is working on a book of stories
from the lives of young adults in her church about when God became
real for them.
A few of Emily's favorite books are L.M. Montgomery's The Blue
Castle—she identifies with the heroine and loves Montgomery's
descriptive writing and her outlandish character sketches; Jack
London's Martin Eden--his autobiography about his beginning in
writing is especially inspirational; and Mabel Dodge Luhan's Edge
of Taos Desert--Luhan's insightfulness into her personal transformation
is thought-provoking, to say the least.
Emily is a self-employed massage therapist with a BS in wellness
management living in Collegedale.
